Labour would create Earthquake Court for Christchurch

June 10, 2014 in General

This morning’s announcements by Labour leader David Cunliffe included the promise of an Earthquake Court under a Labour-led government. Read the announcement here.

The specialist court would be designed to speed up insurances claims for Cantabrians and help reduce the pressure on the court system caused by earthquake damage claims. It is proposed that it would deal with insurance claims of up to $1 million and would be a special division of the Christchurch District Court . All costs, including lawyers’ costs and witness fees, would be paid by the Crown, with the Crown recouping a proportion of the award if the case is successful.

Should any political party attempt to abolish social security unemployment insurance and eliminate labor laws and farm programs you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group of course that believes you can do these things. Among them are a few other Texas oil millionaires and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.

There is a certain kind of person who takes great delight in commenting on political blogs with a variant of the following:

“It’s no use voting! They’re all the same! It doesn’t matter what you vote for – a politician always gets in!”

No doubt you’ll be familiar with their work.

What would you do to reform Health Care?

How would you reform the US health insurance system?

July 16, 2013 in Health insurance

I am very leery of government control – I think the bureaucracy would waste dollars, and I’m extremely troubled by the idea of the government having so much control. I’d rather have my HMO cheat me than the government – at least there is one more than one HMO to belong to.

But people who advocate government-run health care have a right to ask what the alternative is.

I have a few ideas.

If the founding fathers were alive today, who would they agree with over health care?

July 14, 2013 in Health insurance

Liberal version – Access to health care is a fundamental right, no one should be denied coverage for “pre-existing conditions”, and there should be some degree of government regulation over insurance companies (unless the government wants to sell insurance).

Conservative version – Health care is a privilege, not a right. Pre-existing conditions should not be covered and it’s your fault for not having health insurance at the time. The government may not regulate the insurance companies so that they can increase their premiums and rates over consumers.

I’d bet they’d go with the liberal version.

How would you solve the health care problem?

July 8, 2013 in Health insurance

How would you solve the health care problem?
Assuming that you feel the current healthcare bill is flawed, how do you fix the following problems?

Health insurance companies can deny health insurance to anyone they please, at any time and for any reason. This includes sick and dying children, even when their parents have paid for them.

They have denied some bone marrow transplants (cancer) and operations for the blind to see, even when these people had their health insurance.

If you loose your job, and can’t afford cobra, (and really, who can while unemployed?) you no longer have health insurance.
