Offering Health Insurance as a Small Employer

August 8, 2014 in General

Small businesses and the people who own them are the backbone of their communities. In a larger, interwoven sense, when combined with similar-sized businesses across the United States they are the backbone of this country. While the intrinsic benefits of owning a small business are numerous, providing health insurance to employees is not necessarily one of them. For many employers, the expense has not been affordable, and in some industries with higher employee turnover, the obligation seems as appealing as a can of worms.

This may be changing as there are several benefits to offering health insurance. Here are some examples:

Integrating Health and Microfinance in India

August 6, 2014 in General

> Posted by Somen Saha, Indian Institute of Public Health Gandhinagar, with inputs from Marcia Metcalfe, Freedom from Hunger and Sabina Rogers, Microcredit Summit Campaign

Microfinance institutions (MFIs) and self-help groups (SHGs) in India are increasingly recognizing the potential of offering both health and financial services. In a query of 25 MFIs across the country providing integrated services, the number of borrowers totaled nearly 18 million. A new report, Integrated Health and Microfinance in India, Volume II: The Way Forward, highlights best practices in integrating health and microfinance programs, particularly in light of India’s aim for universal health care, showcases potential interventions that can be adopted by microfinance institutions and NGOs that serve SHGs, and outlines the role of India’s existing livelihood promotion SHG initiatives in addressing access barriers to health services.

For the 1.3 billion people around the world who live on less than $1.25 a day, poverty means vulnerability. The poor face a disproportionate risk of disease and a heightened financial burden that includes both the direct costs of medical care and the indirect costs of work time lost. This financial impact also limits the ability of the poor to fully participate in financial services, as poor health is one of the most frequently cited reasons for loan default and drop-out. Because the poor are one illness away from losing everything, there is an increasing realization that countries need a pro-poor pathway towards universal healthcare.

Essential Factors To Consider Before Buying A Health Insurance

July 25, 2014 in General

03

Health is the top priority every house not in Calgary but entire Canada, and why not protecting your loved ones against any unpleasant clinical unforeseen event is your main concern. Whether you obtain your medical coverage on your own or through an employer, you can save a big amount of money in both the short and long term when you compare health insurance plans. There are lots of people who get confused by the various choices of health insurance available in the market. Therefore, we are suggesting some key factors that you must consider before buying any health related life insurance.

Florida Gets $42M In Refunds Under New Health Law

July 25, 2014 in General

MIAMI (AP) — Federal health officials say nearly 1 million Floridians who bought insurance under the Affordable Care Act will receive roughly $42 million in refunds thanks to a provision in the law.

The law requires insurers to spend at least 80 percent of premium dollars on patient care. If insurers spend an excessive amount on profits and red tape, they must refund consumers or employers.

Health and Human Services officials said Thursday that Florida consumers could receive a refund check or a reimbursement to the credit card they used to pay their insurance premium. The savings averages about $65 a family.

How Your Health Insurance Company Can Still Screw You, Despite Obamacare

July 22, 2014 in General

The Affordable Care Act as a brand new law can’t be expected to have anticipated every problem, but so far, as long as it isn’t hampered by republican local obstruction, it has been doing a pretty good job of doing what it was designed to do. Having said that, I still believe that we should have stuck to our guns and fought much harder for a single payer system; its internal costs would be much lower, Medicare already has a good track record, and we the people would be the sole investors and performance trackers of a Medicare For All insurance plan. Health Insurance companies already in place would have taken up the slack of insuring all of us for the remaining twenty percent of health costs that Medicare For All wouldn’t cover so it wouldn’t be as if we all threw the Health Insurance companies out of business. It might be that the days of earning record profits would be over and is that necessarily such a bad thing? I can’t imagine that any health insurance employee can feel that good about what they do when they are denying coverage or payment to people who see their insurance as necessary to not going bankrupt or saving someone’s health from deteriorating, it cannot be a good feeling at the end of a work day.
